Meeting Global Leaders in Ophthalmology
One of the standout aspects of the conference was the opportunity to meet world-renowned leaders in the field. Dr Eric Donnenfeld, an esteemed ophthalmologist from New York, impressed attendees with his personable nature and vast expertise in cataract and refractive surgery.
Professor Michael W. Belin also delivered impactful presentations. A globally recognised expert in cataract and refractive surgery, Professor Belin is a faculty member at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson. His contributions to the field, especially his work on corneal and refractive surgery, have been transformative. He is the creator of the Belin/Ambrosio Enhanced Ectasia Display (BAD), a vital diagnostic tool used worldwide. Professor Belin is also the recipient of the prestigious 2024 Castroviejo Award, the highest honour in the field of corneal and anterior segment research.
Transformative Learnings
Dr Gouws found the conference deeply impactful, particularly in terms of changing perspectives on specific procedures. The sessions covered a wide range of topics, including:
•Cataract Surgery: Strategies for patient care and new developments in intraocular lenses.
•Astigmatism Management: Techniques such as limbal relaxing incisions.
•Laser Vision Correction: An exploration of technologies like LASIK, SMILE, and TransPRK.
•Keratoconus Treatment: Updates on corneal cross-linking techniques.
